A payday loan is the most expensive common way to borrow $500 — and it’s popular precisely because everything cheaper requires more time, paperwork or patience than an emergency allows. This ranking exists so the trade-off is at least a visible one. Each option is priced on a realistic $500 need, cheapest first, with what it actually takes to get it.
The Ranking, Cheapest First
| # | Option | Real cost on $500 | Time to money | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Assistance & hardship programs | Free | Days–weeks | Eligibility; deadlines |
| 2 | Nonprofit credit counseling plan | Free–$50 | Days | Doesn’t lend; it restructures |
| 3 | Credit union PAL | ~$25–$55 total (28% APR cap) | 1–3 days | Membership required |
| 4 | Credit card cash advance | ~$15 fee + ~28% APR if carried | Minutes (ATM) | Needs available limit |
| 5 | Overdraft cushion | ~$26–$35 flat | Instant | Only covers small gaps |
| 6 | Online installment loan | Varies widely — 6.63%–225% APR | 1–2 days | Underwriting; term lock-in |
| 7 | Payday / cash advance | ~$75–$125 (state cap) | Minutes–1 day | Full debit on payday |
| 8 | Auto title loan | ~$125+/mo, vehicle at risk | Hours | Repossession risk |
| 9 | Tribal installment | $300+ over months (400–800% APR) | 1 day | Highest total cost |
1–2. The Free Tier Nobody Applies To
Rent hardship funds, utility payment plans, church and community grants, and nonprofit credit counseling cost nothing and are ignored by almost everyone in a cash emergency — partly because they don’t advertise, partly because pride. Benefits.gov catalogs federal programs by need; NFCC agencies negotiate with creditors for free. A utility that agrees to split a past-due bill is a 100%-APR loan you never took.
3. The Purpose-Built Substitute: the PAL
Federal credit unions offer Payday Alternative Loans under an NCUA rule written for exactly this comparison: $200–$2,000, terms of 1–6 months (PAL I) or up to 12 (PAL II), APR capped at 28%, application fee capped at ~$20–$30, no rollovers. On $500 over three months, a PAL costs about $20–$25 — versus $75–$125 for a payday advance. The friction is membership (often $5–$25 and a form) and slightly slower decisions. Find a credit union at mycreditunion.gov.
4–5. The Products You Already Have
A credit card cash advance costs a fee plus interest that starts immediately — still roughly a quarter of payday pricing if cleared in a month. An overdraft cushion (bank feature or apps like those in our app compatibility guides) covers sub-$200 gaps for a flat fee. Both are already open to you; both are cheaper than new credit.
6–7. The Credit Tier — Where This Site Operates
Online installment loans spread repayment over months (APRs from 6.63% to 225% depending on profile — state pages show local rules), and payday advances price at the state cap (see the 38-state cost table). These are the fast-decision options for bad-credit profiles — the honest case for them is speed and access, and the honest case against them is on the table: every option above is cheaper when it’s available in time.
8–9. The Bottom Tier — Know Before You Go
Title loans put your car on the line for pricing comparable to payday credit. Tribal installment loans — legal, disclosed, sovereign — are the market’s most expensive standing product, detailed plainly in our tribal guide. If a tribal loan is genuinely your only door, borrow the minimum and never roll it; if it’s merely your fastest door, work upstairs first.
The One-Sentence Version
Every rung you can climb from the bottom of this table is money saved — and the only thing payday credit sells that the top of the table doesn’t is speed. If the emergency can survive 48 hours, the list says so; if it can’t, at least you now know the price of the shortcut.
